BEWBU: Transforming Higher Education in the Western Balkans

At Edutools, we believe that education must evolve to meet the needs of each context. That is why we are participating in the European project BEWBU (Blended Education in Western Balkan Universities), an initiative aimed at modernizing higher education in the Western Balkans through blended learning, a model that integrates face-to-face education with digital learning.

An Educational Model Adapted to Reality

Blended learning is a commitment to flexibility and accessibility, two key elements in regions where university structures need to be updated to address current challenges. In Kosovo, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Albania, universities are seeking innovative models that allow them to offer quality education without the limitations of traditional face-to-face teaching. This is where BEWBU comes into play.

From the University of León, we have taken a key role in this project. Our team has produced an initial report that analyzes the current state of blended education in the Western Balkans. This document, presented to the European Union, serves as the starting point for developing strategies to facilitate the adoption of this model in the region.

What Are We Doing in BEWBU?

Our involvement in this project goes beyond the initial analysis. At Edutools, we are leading a large-scale study involving universities from four countries in the Balkans. We aim to understand how students perceive blended education, the level of preparedness of universities, and the training needs of educators to successfully integrate this model into their classes.

We are working alongside the Aleksandër Moisiu University of Durrës (Albania), the project coordinator, and a consortium of eleven universities from the region and the European Union, including the University of León (Spain), Tampere University of Applied Sciences (Finland), University West (Sweden), Aleksandër Moisiu University of Durrës (Albania), Fan S. Noli University of Korçë (Albania), University of Mostar (Bosnia and Herzegovina), University of Banja Luka (Bosnia and Herzegovina), University of Montenegro (Montenegro), Donja Gorica University (Montenegro), University of Pristina (Kosovo), and University of Fehmi Agani (Kosovo). Furthermore, the project is supported by the Ministries of Education of Albania, Montenegro, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, ensuring that the results have a tangible impact on educational policies in the region.

A Project with Real Impact

BEWBU is not just an academic study; it is a commitment to educational transformation in a region with specific needs. Our goal is to develop a hybrid education model tailored to the reality of the Balkans, train teachers in innovative methodologies, and ensure that this approach is sustainably integrated into curricula.

At Edutools, we are convinced that this project will mark a turning point in higher education in the Balkans. We are committed to a more inclusive, accessible, and high-quality education. We will continue working to ensure that educational modernization becomes not just a goal, but a reality.
